NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The wait for Norfolk’s first Ikea store is almost over.
In a news release issued Tuesday, Ikea announced the new store will open April 10. Customers can begin lining up at the store at 5 a.m. for a 9 a.m. grand opening.
The new, 331,000 square foot Ikea store is being built in the northwestern corner of Interstate 64 and Northampton Boulevard — just down the street from Norfolk Premium Outlets.
The grand opening for Ikea’s Norfolk store was initially slated for summer 2018, but it was pushed back. Ikea officials said the location was smaller than they are used to, which required plans to be tweaked.
Charlie Plisco, store manager, said in a statement Tuesday, “We are happy with the construction progress to date at the future Ikea Norfolk store.”
Ikea said the store will come equipped with the largest solar rooftop array in Hampton Roads and charging stations for electric vehicles. It will also feature a 450-seat restaurant that will — of course — serve Ikea’s famous Swedish meatballs.
The store is expected to hire 250 workers by the time the store opens, Ikea said. Open positions include sales, customer service and goods flow.
“We are confident we will be ready to open our doors by April and look forward to recruiting and training new co-workers joining the Ikea family, as well as sharing the Ikea experience with future customers in the Hampton Roads area,” Plisco said in his statement.
Ikea said customers will soon learn more about grand opening plans and promotions.
