Norfolk State eager to continue run in the NIT

NORFOLK (WAVY) — Last Saturday was a day to forget for the Norfolk State basketball team. The Spartans lost to North Carolina Central in the MEAC championship game at Scope, but as regular season champions, NSU earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.

In stunning fashion, Norfolk State, the 8 seed, stunned top seed Alabama in the opening round of the NIT. So in four days, the Spartans went from rock bottom to being on top of the world.

It went from anguish to jubilation, coach Robert Jones said. Saturday was a tough day for the whole program and Wednesday was probably the second greatest win in program history, it was just two ends of the spectrum.

Now Norfolk State gets to play another day. Monday they play at Colorado to take on the Buffaloes of the Pac 12 on ESPN 2.

Of course everyone wanted to go to the NCAA Tournament but maybe it wasn’t in the cards for us to get there this and maybe it is in the cards for us to make a run in the NIT, Jones said.

On Wednesday it definitely revived us a lot, guard Steven Whitley said.

On Monday, another chance to keep the season alive against Colorado.
