NORFOLK (WAVY) – Despite blistering-hot temperatures on Tuesday, youngsters from all over the area showed up to SB Ballard Stadium on the campus of Old Dominion University for Norfolk Sheriff Joe Baron’s annual football camp.
Youth players had the opportunity to sharpen their skills with help from the Norfolk Sheriff’s Department, as well as former ODU quarterbacks David Washington and Thomas DeMarco.
“I”m not too old to remember what it’s like looking those simple things like a high five from a player that played in high school or was a bit older than me,” said DeMarco, who went on to a successful stint in the Canadian Football League.
For Sheriff Baron, it’s a chance to further forge ties with the community he and his department serves. “It’s a great opportunity for people in law enforcement, like myself, to have a great working relationship with kids,” he said.
“They see us in a positive way, instead of a negative way that is sometimes portrayed in the community…because it’s confrontational sometimes.”
