News

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church was burglarized and vandalized Saturday morning, Norfolk Police say.

Police responded to the 200 block of St. Pauls Boulevard after they received reports regarding a commercial robbery.

When they arrived, police saw several shattered windows in the church and smelled gas. Police say Norfolk Fire-Rescue was called to the scene to stop the gas leak.

They arrived on scene shortly after 11:42 a.m. and evacuated the building, according to Norfolk emergency dispatchers.

Police say they searched the church after the fire-rescue crews said it was safe. They found a room inside the church had been vandalized.

Detectives say no other places of worship in the city were affected. They’re continuing to investigate the burglary.

On Tuesday, police released surveillance video from the church that shows the crime in progress.

If you recognize the person in the video or have any information that could help investigation, please call the Crime Line at 1 (888) LOCK-U-UP.
