NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two parents are in custody after allegedly neglecting their disabled son to the point of starvation.

Georgia and Philip Arenz were arrested by the Norfolk Police Department on Tuesday and charged with the malicious wounding and neglect of their 24-year-old son, Jason.

Jason Arenz suffers from cerebral palsy. His father brought him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Tuesday to be treated for bedsores, according to court documents.

When Jason Arenz arrived at the hospital, he was covered in feces and open wounds. The wounds were infected with maggots and insect larvae, and he was dehydrated and starved, court documents state.

Doctors believed he was likely septic from his condition.

Philip Arenz told authorities that his wife is their son’s primary caregiver. She allegedly noticed Jason Arenz’s bedsores about a month prior, and had been treating the wounds with ointment at their home, according to court documents.

Philip Arenz didn’t realize the “severity of neglect” until Monday. He brought his son to the hospital the next day.

Georgia and Philip Arenz were denied bond in a hearing on May 29.
