NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 9-month-old daughter is due in court Friday morning.
The baby’s mother told 10 On Your Side the little girl’s name is Makayla Smith. She shared photos of Makayla and said she had a twin brother.
Makayla died Tuesday morning after EMS found her unresponsive at a unit in the 300 block of Nicholson Street. She passed away shortly after arriving at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.
On Thursday, the medical examiner ruled Makayla’s death a homicide, and police moved arrested her father, 28-year-old Kasiam A. Tinsley. Detectives haven’t released a cause of death or any other details behind the investigation.
This isn’t the first time Tinsley has been accused of hurting a family member.
In July 2017, officers were called out for a domestic disturbance. Court records show officers found a woman on the ground with a bloody nose and Tinsley standing over her. Tinsley ran, but was eventually caught and arrested.
An emergency protective order was granted for the woman.
Neighbors at the housing complex told 10 On Your Side off camera there were other children who lived in the same unit as Tinsley. They said they’re heartbroken for the family.
Tinsley is currently at the Norfolk City Jail without bond. He’s set to be arraigned Friday and we will have a crew there in court. Be sure to stay with WAVY for the latest updates.
