NNPD chief holding community walk in Denbigh area

News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The chief of Newport News police and his officers will have another community engagement walk Thursday near the Denbigh area.

Steve Drew took over the department at the beginning of July, he says the walks are apart of his community policing goal.

Thursday’s walk comes after a spike in deadly violence across the city. For far this year, detectives have investigated 16 homicides.

Earlier this month, the police department visited the Cottage Grove apartment. A 6-year-old was shot in the leg during cookout in that same area in June.

Five juveniles have been shot in Newport News since June 1.

“I don’t see the outrage that I would like to see or expect. Residents don’t always speak out. They are in fear, they are afraid we are going to knock on their door or that their name is going to get released. Or they are going to figure out who is providing information,” said Drew.

The walk is slated to begin at Lexington Commons apartments at 4 p.m.
