HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News teenager is facing charges after state police say he crashed a stolen car in Hampton.

Virginia State Police said the chase started just before 4:15 a.m. Monday when a trooper spotted a stolen 2008 Ford Fusion on Interstate 664 North at Aberdeen Road.

The trooper tried to pull over the Fusion, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed.

State police said the driver merged onto I-64 West before he exited the interstate at Magruder Boulevard.

The driver lost control in the area of Butler Farm Road and hit several trees, which caused the vehicle to ignite and become fully engulfed in flames.

State police said a trooper broke through the driver’s side window and removed the driver, 18-year-old Collins Alexander Turner, from the burning car.

Turner has been charged with felony elude, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, failure to stop at a red light and no drivers license.

State police said Turner suffered only minor cuts and bruises in the crash.
