Newport News police open ‘safe exchange zone’ at HQ

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — How often do you meet up with people you buy and sell things with online?

Newport News police is hoping to make those interactions a little safer.

Police just added a safe exchange zone — with two marked parking spaces — right in front of the department’s headquarters. The zone has cameras that record 24 hours a day — and the lights above the spots are extra bright.

Jose Huerta, a Newport News resident, said, “It’s actually a good thing to keep people safe because sometimes these days it’s crazy.”

Police tell 10 On Your Side they’ve seen an increase in the number of people doing online transactions and say robberies also played a role.
