Newport News police officer involved in hit-and-run

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A Newport News Police officer was involved in a hit-and-run on Saturday night.

Officials say around 9:30 p.m, a Newport News officer was in his marked police car stopped at a red light near Prince Drew Road and Warwick Boulevard when he was struck from behind by a truck. 

Shortly after the accident, the driver of the truck fled the scene. The officer involved pursued the vehicle for a short distance to the Riverside entrance of Warwick Boulevard where the truck struck another vehicle. The female driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, identified as 57-year-old Waverly Callicutt of Hampton, was taken into custody. He was charged with DUI 3rd or subsequent within 10 years, two counts of fail to report injury during accident, driving after forfeiture of license, disorderly conduct, traffic signal violation, unsafe/defective equipment, regulations: laned traffic, and disregard/elude law enforcement command.

The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
