Newport News police identify first homicide victim of 2019

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is dead after he was shot Saturday afternoon in the 300 block of 55th Street, police say.

Newport News Police said officers arrived on scene just after 2 p.m. and found 30-year-old Quintez Moore suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.

A police spokesperson said a woman was detained in connection to the shooting.

“She could have possibly been involved in the incident and detectives are just speaking with her to determine the circumstances of what took place,” said Master Police Officer B.J. Maynard.

The woman who detained has not been charged.

This is the first homicide of the year in Newport News.

“It’s almost the middle of March now. This is the first one. We haven’t gone on a streak like this since 2016,” said Maynard.

While they continue to investigate the circumstances of Saturday’s shooting, Maynard believes their efforts will continue to keep people safe overall.

“You know a lot of focus on the community, getting out, speaking with everybody, that has helped, that is helping and we are going to continue to do that becasue it’s pushing us in a positive direction,” he said.
