Newport News man runs to Wawa store for safety from robbery suspects; 1 charged

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — On an afternoon in late November, a man was approached by several men, according to police.

The 28-year-old man was walking along Jefferson Avenue when the men said they needed to check his pockets. Police say after one of the men threatened to stab him, the male victim fled and took shelter in a Wawa to call police. 

While police were searching the area, they came across 18-year-old Lamere Hines. After further investigation, Hines was charged with attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and attempted malicious wounding.

There were no reported injuries.
