DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Three people have been arrested in connection with the recent murder of a Petersburg man at a car wash in Dinwiddie County.

Umar Abdus Salaam, 47, of Petersburg, was found dead early Wednesday morning at Zoe’s Bubbles and Sudz detailing, which is connected to a Stop N’ Go gas station on Boydton Plank Road off of Route 1.

A friend of the victim told 8News that Salaam was a co-owner of the car wash and a father whose “arms were always open to people” and who “let people in too easy.”

“People are savages,” Timothy Couch said. “It’s unfortunate he fell victim to that.”

On Friday, the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office announced that three men had been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Thornell Sledge, 24, of Roundtop Avenue in Petersburg, 25-year-old Caleb Q. Smith of Green Court in Newport News and 18-year-old Jhane Short of Homestead Drive in Petersburg, are all being held without bond at Meherrin Regional Jail in Alberta.
