Newport News man flushed marijuana while police tried to detain him

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man tried to flush marijuana down a toilet while Newport News police struggled to take him into custody on Wednesday. 

Police said around 5 p.m. two of their officers were on bike patrol in the area of Lucas Creek Road. The two stopped to talk a couple citizens that were sitting on shared porch of an apartment in the 800 block. 

While the officers were still talking with the citizens, a man walked out of an apartment with a large bag of marijuana hanging out of his pants. The man was later identified as 23-year-old Lamon Scott. 

Police said they saw a small juvenile walking around in the apartment and told Scott he was being detained. Scott then ran back inside the apartment and attempted the shut the door on the officers. 

The officers were able to get inside the apartment and said they told Scott again that he was being detained. According to police, there was a physical struggle between the officers and Scott as they attempted to take him into custody. 

During the struggle, police said Scott starting flushing marijuana down a toilet. A third officer arrived at the apartment and Scott was tased as the struggle to detain him continued. 

Scott was taken into custody and charged with two counts of assault and battery on law enforcement, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
