Newport News K-9 retires after 8 years on the force

NEWPORT NEWS. Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Police Department K-9 Unit has a new retiree.

K-9 Klause retired Wednesday because of long-term health issues, after serving nearly eight years on the force. 

Born December 3, 2009, Klause was purchased by Newport News police almost a year later on November 10, 2010 and was trained in patrol work and explosives detection.

Klause will continue living with his handler.

His replacement, K-9 Jakk, will start explosives detection school this week
