PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The next week is going to be a busy time across the Commonwealth as many people head out to visit family, friends and loved ones for Thanksgiving.

AAA projects nearly 1.5 million residents in Virginia will travel 50 miles or more away from home over the holiday, which is a 4.8 percent increase over 2017.

This would represent the highest volume of travelers since 2005, according to AAA.

A vast majority of travelers this year — some 91 percent — are expected to hit the road, which is a near 5 percent increase over last year.

AAA said Thanksgiving Day, Friday or Saturday are the best days to travel in most cases. Increased travel times are expected the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

The Thanksgiving holiday is considered to be between Wednesday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 26.
