NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Navy officials say the 101 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the “critical days of summer.”
Usually, people take vacations or enjoy time outside during the summertime — but high numbers of sailor deaths pushed leaders to launch a new awareness campaign.
On average, 17 sailors die each year during May and September. The Navy says the most dangerous activities include motorcycles crashes, car accidents and drownings.
The goal of the campaign make sure sailors know the risks and take precautions while off duty in the summer.
The Naval Safety Center offers training programs for safety for things like motorcycles.
