RALEIGH, N.C. (KXAN) – A missed connection led to two women connecting in the most miraculous way.
25-year-old Samantha Snipes missed her flight one day, and ended up flying standby sitting next to Temple Phipps, 42. Snipes was eight months pregnant.
“Yeah, I missed my flight ’cause I was like, too big to navigate the airport,” Snipes said. “It was the Atlanta airport, so it was huge.”
The two women began talking, and that talk turned to Snipes’ baby on the way. Phipps was excited for Temple, but the pregnant woman shared how nervous she was, and that she was considering putting the baby up for adoption because of family issues. Temple, who had never had any children, had an idea — maybe she could adopt the baby.
“I thought, ‘I mean, she could always say no,” Phipps said. “But if I … she didn’t have a plan, and maybe this was divine and that’s why I’m supposed to be here.”
The two said goodbye at the airport, but three days later Phipps got a phone call. It was Snipes, who said she had the baby and asked if Phipps wanted to meet him. Phipps ended up spending hours with the two of them, and then Snipes made the most difficult decision of her life.
“I’m just sitting here like, ‘I’m going to give up everything I have that I have known my whole life,'” Snipes remembered thinking. “But he looks so happy — she looks so happy. What do I want to do? And it was — I mean it’s scary, it’s really scary, but it’s the best thing I could have done in my life.”
Vaughn is now 18 months old, and the women meet up to take him for playdates in the park. Snipes ended up moving nearby and starting a photography business. The two women are considering writing a book about their experience together and the missed connection that changed the paths of their lives.
