Police: Active shooter suspect in Panama City ‘down’

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WKRG) – Panama City police say there is an active shooter situation on Beck Avenue.

UPDATE: 5 p.m.: Police say the suspect, Kevin Robert Holroyd, is “down.” It’s unclear at this time whether that means he is dead. Holroyd was barricaded for hours in an apartment that police later learned was covered in gasoline. This is developing news, check back for updates. 


UPDATE 4 p.m. : The suspect has been identified as Kevin Robert Holroyd. He’s barricaded in an apartment and multiple authorities are on scene. One person has been taken to the hospital with a minor injury, according to city spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence. 


UPDATE 2:45 p.m.: The Bay County Sheriff’s Office says they have just breached the front door where the active shooting suspect is barricaded.

The spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says the Bay County Bomb Squad assisted in breaching the barricaded front door. 

According to the spokesperson, deputies responded to reports of shots fired around 12:45 p.m. to the area of Briarwood Apartments at 23rd Street and Beck Avenue in Panama City. Deputies took fire and returned fire, the spokesperson said.

The suspect is believed to be connected to a homicide that happened earlier Tuesday in Walton County.

Police say avoid the area of the 2300 block of Beck Avenue until further notice.

Witnesses report hearing more than 50 gunshots in the area.
