RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — Gov. Ralph Northam on Monday issued an order for the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia is to be flown at half-staff in “respect and memory” to Sen. John McCain.
The order calls for flags to be at half-staff at the state Capitol as well as all local, state, and federal buildings and grounds in Virginia. McCain passed away Saturday at the age of 81.
Politicians locally and nationally, Democrat and Republican celebrated McCain’s life Saturday evening with an outpouring of condolences. Northam said in a statement McCain “made service to his country the cornerstone of his life.”

The flag at the White House returned to full-staff Monday after being lowered over the weekend. Flags stayed at half-staff at the U.S. Capitol.
Northam said the flag order for Virginia would remain in effect until Set. 2.
