VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A mother has been charged after authorities found a missing Wisconsin child in Virginia Beach.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin said 9-year-old Mason Byrdic was reported missing the night of Dec. 23.

According to the sheriff’s office, a Virginia court placed Byrdic in the custody of his grandparents, who live in the county.

The child’s grandparents allowed his mother, 29-year-old Julia Anne Byrdic of Pompano Beach, Florida, to take him for a short visit the morning Dec. 23.

The sheriff’s office said Julia Byrdic failed to return her son and fled the state.

Four days later, Sauk County deputies identified an area of Virginia Beach as a possible location for Julia and Mason Byrdic. Virginia Beach officers responded to this location, and found the two hiding in a bedroom.

Julia has been charged with interference with custody-beyond visitation, a felony. Authorities were holding her in Virginia until she could be extradited to Sauk County.

Mason Byrdic was in the custody of the Virginia Beach Police Department and Child Protective Services until his grandparents could arrive and pick him up.
