MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WKRG) — Mexico Beach is considered ground zero of Hurricane Michael.
Near Category 5 strength winds and storm surged leveled many homes throughout the city. Many of the homes that were not knocked down sustained extreme damage.
On Wednesday, many homeowners were taking a look at their properties for the first time. Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey estimates between 80 to 85 percent of homes will need to be demolished.
Residents say they are determined to move forward and build the city back up.
“My neighbors and I want to rebuild,” said Mike Jolley. “Mexico Beach is a great little community.”
There is a National Guard checkpoint as you approach Mexico Beach. Only homeowners are allowed through the checkpoint for now.
