Man tricks porch pirates with boxes filled with soiled kitty litter

SHAMOKIN, Penn. (WBRE/WYOU) – In the season of ordering and receiving gifts, porch pirates in a Pennsylvania county are on the prowl for unopened packages.

One victim has had enough, so he’s giving the thieves a “gift.”

“I forgot it, well yeah, I sort of forgot about it, but then I thought, ‘No, I’m going to play some games,'” said Robert Lynch.

The 61-year-old is fed up since thieves broke into his car twice within the past three years.

The first time, he had nearly $60 worth of change stolen. The second time, the thief stole $500 worth of tools.

He’s hoping what was stolen off his porch this time may make those thieves never come back. He said he left boxes filled with kitty litter and feces out on his porch, but didn’t take it out to be collected by the garbage men.

Surely enough, the boxes were stolen by a porch pirate. He got a good look at the thief thanks to recently installed surveillance cameras.

“When I first saw it, I thought I couldn’t believe somebody would take that. But then I laughed about it. If I was on the bus and sitting by that person and they opened the box, I mean the smell was unbelievable,” Lynch said.

Although Lynch can laugh about it now, he said it’s still a serious matter that people are frequently stealing things on Diamond Street. Police have been made aware and are on the lookout.

“So right now, I have two more boxes out now, and Merry Christmas,” Lynch said.

Police told Lynch that as long as he’s not harming people he can leave whatever he wants on the front porch.

Lynch has also started a trend in the neighborhood. It seems his neighbors are also filling boxes with garbage and seeing if people will take them.
