HS pitcher strikes out friend to win playoff game, consoles him

SAINT PAUL, MN (CNN) — A true act of sportsmanship — and friendship — was on display at high school baseball game in Minnesota.

After striking out his friend on the opposing team to win the game — and a sectional championship in the process — pitcher Ty Koehn initially choose consolation over celebration.

Koehn gave jack Kocon a long hug and walked him back toward his dugout before joining his teammates to celebrate the win. The two played Little League together before going to different high schools north of Minneapolis — but they remained friends.

Koehn said he wanted Kocon to know their friendship is more important the outcome of a game.

The win means Koehn and his teammates on the Mounds View Mustangs will play in the state tournament, which begins on Thursday.
