PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Mika Cross knows a lot about being a federal employee.
“I worked for USDA, the Department of Labor, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of Personnel Management,” Cross said. She realizes what furloughed federal employees are going through right now.
After 20 years working for the government, she’s now a vice president for Flexjobs, an online job service she says has thousands of opportunities for people who have now missed their first paycheck.
“We have American Red Cross, non-profits, we have emergency response, we have as I mentioned customer service, help-desk, IT, STEM and all of those kinds of things in between.”
Cross says many of the jobs are temporary, work-from-home opportunities that are a good match for the skill sets of federal workers.
“Online tutoring, they’re looking for people that are just simply English speakers and good communicators.”
And Flexjobs insists these are real jobs, not scams.
“These are positions that are not pyramid schemes,” Cross said Friday via Skype. “We ensure that all jobs are hand-screened, and I really believe in this kind of a platform to be able to offset some of the hardships financially that federal employees are undergoing.”
Cross herself was caught up in the shutdown of 2013.
“It definitely took a toll on engagement, it took a toll on productivity to some degree, but I will say federal employees are extremely resilient.”
Flexjobs.com is offering discounts on 30-day and annual subscriptions when federal employees use the code SHUTDOWN.
