BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Officials at Stop & Shop supermarkets are investigating how a black widow spider got into a package of grapes sold from their Branford store.
“I just found a Black Widow Spider in my organic grapes! I just bought them at The Branford Stop & Shop this morning and wanted everyone to be on the look out!”
WAVY sister station WTNH News 8 spoke to store officials, who said they were aware of the situation.
On Tuesday afternoon, Stop & Shop issued the following statement:
“The safety of our customers and associates is very important to us [Stop & Shop]. Stop & Shop and our grape growers take necessary measures to keep spiders out of the grapes that are sold. Despite that effort, it is possible for a spider to get into the bunches as they are a part of the natural, organic environment. We invite all customers who find their produce to not be of quality to come into the store for a refund or exchange.”
Stop & Shop has offered the woman a full refund for her produce.
