VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An “unprecedented response” from customers on Pay Your Age Day has prompted Build-A-Bear to close lines at stores nationwide.

In a post on its website, the company said they were seeing “longer than expected lines and large crowds” for the event. Lines have been shutdown at stores for safety concerns, the company said in a separate post on Facebook.

We understand some Guests are disappointed and we will reach out directly as soon as possible.

Some customers in Hampton Roads were able to avoid the lines by arriving early.

Viewer Edward Matienzo shared a photo of his 1-year-old son paying for a Bulbasaur at the Build-A-Bear at Lynnhaven Mall. Matienzo said they got to the store at 7 a.m.

Another viewer, Jennifer Lynn Pitt, took a photo of the line at the Williamsburg Premium Outlets Build-A-Bear, which was wrapping around the building at 10:30 a.m.

With the Pay Your Age Day, Build-A-Bear was allowing customers to pay their current age in dollars. Read more about the event here.
