Motorcyclist killed in collision involving loose horse on Eastern Shore

BIRDSNEST, Va. (WAVY) — A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night after he collided with a loose horse that had wandered onto Route 13 on the Eastern Shore, state police say.

Virginia State Police said the crash happened at 9 p.m. in Birdsnest, which is just north of Machipongo in Northampton County. 

Two motorcyclists were going north on Route 13 when a the horse entered the highway, and was hit by a motorcycle that was being driven by 26-year-old Shawn Michael Simpson.

State police said the second motorcyclist tried to avoid the crash, and laid down the bike further down the road. He was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

Simpson was killed instantly in the crash, and the horse died at the scene. State police said speed and alcohol were not factors.
