NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A mother is being charged with driving drunk and crashing a car with three children inside in Newport News.
Newport News police say 38-year-old Melody Powell was charged for the crash, which happened Tuesday afternoon on Blount Point Road.
Responding officers spoke with Powell, who said she was driving east on Blount Point, tried to turn left onto Madison Lane and was hit by a truck. Powell stated she had just picked up her daughters, who are 6, 8, and 9 years old.
Police say Powell’s speech was slurred and officers detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage. Powell denied that she had anything to drink, but did not pass sobriety tests.
The children did not suffer any major injuries, but police say the 9-year-old complained of arm pain.
Powell was arrested and charged with DWI first offense and three counts of child abuse/neglect. Police say Child Protective Services (CPS) was contacted.
