NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating after several rental storage units were broken into Tuesday morning in Newport News.

Police were notified about the thefts from Extra Space Storage in the 800 block of J. Clyde Morris Blvd around 7:30 a.m. An investigation found 74 units that were broken into.

All of the units targeted had standard padlocks, according to detectives. Rental units with a new circular lock were not touched, police added.

Multiple items have been reported missing, and Extra Space’s owners are in the process of notifying owners.

Extra Space, which is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, operates more than 1,400 locations across 38 states — as well as Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Police spokesman Brandon Maynard said a list of items taken from the units is still being compiled.
