NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The body recovered near the Ocean View Fishing Pier on Monday night was that of a 12-year-old North Carolina boy who went missing this past weekend, family members confirmed.

Davieon Askew’s aunt told 10 On Your Side her nephew died Saturday while swimming near the Ocean View Fishing Pier.

Family members reported the boy missing on Saturday at 7 p.m. after he and two other children were in distress in the water. Family members were able to rescue two of the three children.

Officials say it all happened about 100 yards from the pier.

Multiple agencies, including Norfolk police, Norfolk Fire and Rescue, the Virginia Department of Inland Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search, both above and below water, but the search was eventually called off around 4 p.m. Sunday.

On Monday night, dispatchers received an emergency call just before 9 p.m. after someone spotted Askew’s body in the water near the pier at 414 W. Ocean View Avenue.

Askew’s aunt says the 7th grader was taken to the beach as a late birthday present.
