NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The USS Gravely is deploying this week as the flagship of NATO’s Standing NATO Maritime Group 1.
U.S. Navy officials said the guided-missile destroyer will leave Naval Station Norfolk on Friday, Dec. 28, for the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations — which includes Europe and Africa.
The Gravely recently took part in a pre-deployment exercise that certified the MEU’s and amphibious group’s abilities to conduct military operations at sea.
During this exercise, the Gravely responded to a real-world distress call from a sailboat on Oct. 21. No medical assistance or emergency supplies were needed, and the Gravel stayed near the sailboat until a U.S. Coast Guard ship arrived.
