NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The USS Gravely is deploying this week as the flagship of NATO’s Standing NATO Maritime Group 1.

U.S. Navy officials said the guided-missile destroyer will leave Naval Station Norfolk on Friday, Dec. 28, for the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations — which includes Europe and Africa.

Sailors and Marines with the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) deployed to that area after leaving Norfolk earlier this month.

The Gravely recently took part in a pre-deployment exercise that certified the MEU’s and amphibious group’s abilities to conduct military operations at sea.

During this exercise, the Gravely responded to a real-world distress call from a sailboat on Oct. 21. No medical assistance or emergency supplies were needed, and the Gravel stayed near the sailboat until a U.S. Coast Guard ship arrived.

Look for more coverage on the Gravely’s deployment later this week.
