JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A commercial military transport truck carrying supplies crashed on Interstate 64 Monday morning, spilling diesel fuel and causing an hours-long closure of westbound lanes.
Virginia State Police said the driver of truck ran off the roadway, overcorrected and lost control — causing the truck to tip over and catch fire.
State police said the truck became fully engulfed in flames. The driver and a passenger were able to escape the vehicle.
The driver was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center to treatment, but state police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
State police said the westbound lanes were closed due to a diesel fuel spill.
VDOT cameras showed westbound traffic completely stopped Tuesday morning before officials put a detour in place at the Lightfoot Road exit. The detour remained for more than four hours.
Travel lanes were reopened just before 1 p.m., but crews are still working to clean up the spill.
