JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities in James City County responded to a mercury spill on Thursday afternoon in Lightfoot.

The spill happened just off Richmond Road in the 4600 block of Noland Blvd.

JCC officials say a container that a postal service employee was handling leaked mercury. The postal worker was evaluated on scene and required minimal care, officials say. Dispatchers received a call at 2:35 p.m.

James City County Fire and Police departments, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the York County Department of Fire and Life safety all responded.

Officials say there is no immediate concern at this time, and that efforts were being made to allow those who live at Liberty Crossings townhomes to return to their homes.

The spill is under investigation by the United States Postal Service.
