PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth is host to a special visitor this week, from a city with the same name.
Councillor Lee Mason is Lord Mayor of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom.
10 On Your Side caught up with him in Olde Towne after a tour of Portsmouth Naval Medical Center on Wednesday morning.
He put on the robes he wears for special events and the chain around his neck that is a symbol of his office.
He is on a goodwill tour that also took him to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
He told WAVY.com that our Portsmouth is, “Definitely the warmest Portsmouth, very pretty, very beautiful area, lovely, friendly people here. It’s very good, really enjoying it.”
Portsmouth, England, is home to the British royal navy and is the home port of the new Queen Elizabeth carrier, which is due to dock in Norfolk this week.
Portsmouth resident Rebecca Larys and her husband are serving as the main hosts and coordinators for the Lord Mayor.
The Larys visited Portsmouth, England, a few weeks ago and were treated to a royal tour and private meal with the Lord Mayor, which opened the door for this visit.
The Larys have planned several days of tours and a meet and greet with the local business and civic groups to welcome the Lord Mayor.
