MATHEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Mathews County mother charged in the death of her son remains in jail after her charges were upgraded to first-degree murder.
23-year-old Miranda Gilbert remains behind bars after a hearing Wednesday morning.
A grand jury indicted her earlier this summer on one count of felony homicide of child abuse and neglect and three counts of felony child abuse and neglect.
10 On Your Side first reported about this case back in February when paramedics were called to a home on John Clayton Memorial Highway.
They found a 1-year-old unresponsive in a bathtub.
The child was taken to the hospital where he died.
Investigators say Gilbert told them she had left the child alone and when she returned, hot water was running and her son was face down in the water.
Court documents revealed that her son died of severe burns to his face and body from scalding water.
Gilbert told 10 On Your Side earlier this year that she had left the child alone for only five minutes.
She elected to have court appointed counsel and will keep them for her next court appearance in January.
