NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man who pleaded guilty to posing as a doctor at a Newport News free clinic will serve more than two years in prison.

Vishal Patel was sentenced in a federal court last week to 34 months — or two years and months — and one year of supervised release.

Patel, of Glen Allen, stole information of other licensed physicians to pose as a doctor in online applications. He eventually worked at a Newport News clinic as an independent contractor, where he saw nearly two dozen patients.

Patel was fired from the clinic when he could not verify his credentials.
