Man shot to death in Portsmouth identified

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man was killed late Wednesday night in a shooting in a Portsmouth neighborhood. 

Officers were called to Watts Avenue, just off Portsmouth Boulevard, around 11:15 p.m. and found a man shot in the torso. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Police later identified him as 28-year-old Brandan Smith, of Portsmouth. A RESET (Rapid Engagement of Support in the event of Trauma) walk was scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday in response to the shooting.

No information on a possible suspect or suspects has been released.

Wednesday’s fatal shooting was part of a violent night across Hampton Roads, in which a total of 11 people were shot.

Virginia Beach said six people were shot overnight Thursday at the Oceanfront. Two other gunshot victims walked into Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, but it was not clear whether their wounds were related to what happened at the Oceanfront.

Norfolk police were called to investigate overnight shootings that left two people injured. One of the shootings happened near Naval Station Norfolk.
