Man killed in shooting at Relax Inn in Portsmouth

News

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a man has died after being shot at the Relax Inn on London Boulevard late Saturday night.

Police responded to the scene around 10:45 p.m after receiving the emergency call. They say the man was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the Portsmouth Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating this as a homicide. There is no suspect information at this time.

“It’s a little unnerving. I’ve lived out here for two years now. I’m from Suffolk, so I don’t see much of that happening,” said Darius Garner, who lives near the hotel.

Garner says he walked past the hotel shortly after the shooting.

“Police kind of blocked off the entrance in and out of the hotel. There was just an ambulance, police cars and people walking past trying to see what was going on,” explained Garner.

Another man who lives near the hotel where the shooting took place, Jonathan Murphy, tells 10 On Your Side he saw police heading to the scene from his balcony.

“It was hard not to notice that that many cops were coming down London maybe like every couple minutes, which is unusual,” said Murphy.

“I’m sad for that person and their family,” Murphy added.
