Man in custody after barricade situation in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man was taken into custody without incident after a barricade situation that lasted around two hours Friday afternoon in the Cradock area of the city.

The call for the incident came in around 2 p.m., according to Portsmouth police spokeswoman Misty Holley. 

Officers blocked off the area of Channing Avenue and Prospect Parkway.​

Nearby James Hurst Elementary was put on lockdown during the situation, according to Chernise Newsome with Portsmouth Public Schools. The lockdown was later lifted and students were dismissed.

Police haven’t released details about why the man barricaded himself, or whether he faces any charges.
