NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Police are investigating who shot and killed a 44-year-old Newport News man early Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson Lou Thurston said police and medics responded to the 500 block of Logan Place around 1:30 a.m. for a report of a shooting inside a residence.

They found a man shot and medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Police later identified him as Miacah Archells Cooper.

Maintenance workers were vacuuming broken glass from the living room carpet Tuesday morning. A woman who told us she was the victim’s boyfriend says she was upstairs at the time, and he was downstairs on his phone, just a few feet from their Christmas tree.

The girlfriend says he was in the living room seated near their rear sliding glass door, and she heard several shots. Police confirm the man was shot several times.

We also noticed broken glass and a hole in the front door – but police have no further information on that.

The victim’s girlfriend says they met about two years ago in Savannah, and he had lived in Newport News about six months. She and her mother say they’ll remember him as a friendly man who liked to hug people.

Lloyde Young lives in the next building and says this must be especially heartbreaking for the girlfriend.

“My condolences are with you my dear, and hopefully you’ll be able to make it through this time of year with family and friends surrounding you with love and hope.”

Police ask anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
