HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — One man is dead after a homicide in Hampton early Tuesday morning, police say.

Emergency communications received a call just after 2:45 a.m. in reference to a possible stolen vehicle in the area of Duluth Court and Juanita Drive.

When crews arrived on scene, officers located a male victim, identified as 24-year-old Dominique Rashawn James, of Hampton, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a green Volvo sedan. James was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Neighbors in the area tell 10 On Your Side they are shocked and nervous by what happened. One woman says she knows almost everyone in the neighborhood.

Several hours after the homicide, a woman arrived at the scene in order to check on her grandfather, who lives two houses down from where the car was found.

“It’s very scary to know that my grandfather was in that house, that it could have been closer to his home, you know, the gunshots, a loose bullet flying,” said said. “When it gets close to your area where your family stays, that’s when it hits close to home and it gets closer to you, you never know, you just never know nowadays.”
