NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police continue to investigate an overnight shooting that left one man dead.
Police say it happened at an apartment complex on Coral Court, between Jefferson Avenue and Nettles Drive.
Officials identified the victim as 23-year-old Derrius Franklin of Fayetteville, North Carolina. So far authorities say they do not have a suspect.
Authorities say a call came in around 1:15 a.m. to report a man slumped over in a car. When the cops arrived they say they found Derrius Franklin already dead in a gold vehicle with gunshot wounds.
10 On Your Side spoke with a few neighbors, who said they heard gunshots late last night. One woman was just yards away when she heard the shots.
“We heard it it was like over on that side,” said Sylvia Woodley, pointing across the parking lot. “It came from over on that side and we parked right there and heard the shots come from that side, then we saw somebody running.”
According to Woodley and a few other neighbors who didn’t want to speak on camera, they heard the shots around 10:30 p.m., hours before a call came into Newport News Police to report a man slumped over in a car. Police say they’ve spoke with neighbors, who also say they heard shots hours before anyone called authorities.
Woodley told 10 On Your Side why she didn’t call the police.
“We just thought it was somebody just shooting a gun in the air or whatever just poppin’ off some shots.”
Woodley says she’s surprised to learn someone died in that parking lot last night.
“That’s very shocking to me because like I said it’s normally pretty quiet around here. I actually like this area.”
