Man dies after SUV carrying four flips twice in Gloucester County


GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A man died after being ejected from a vehicle that flipped twice with four passengers, including a child, inside Monday afternoon in Gloucester County. 

Virginia State Police said the crash happened just after 2:50 p.m. at the convergence of Route 14 and Business 17 in the Courthouse area of Gloucester County. 

State police said 24-year-old Jiree Dequayne Burrell was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer heading east on Route 14 he lost control, ran off the roadway and overcorrected — flipping twice and ejecting a back seat passenger who was no wearing a seat belt.

The passenger, 26-year-old Tremayne Safewright, of Newport News, was medevaced from the scene, but died later Monday night. 

State police said charges are pending against Burrell, who suffered serious injuries in the crash. Speed, alcohol and drugs are considered factors in the crash.

A woman and child were also in the vehicle at the time, but only had minor injuries, state police said.
