NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been convicted nearly two years after a man was shot to death in the street on an August 2016 morning in Norfolk.

Grenah Garnett was convicted of first-degree murder on Friday by a jury in Norfolk Circuit Court. He was also convicted of one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The shooting happened just before 11 a.m. on August 22, 2016, near the intersection of Avenue H and Davidson Street.

Police found 50-year-old Andre E. Valentine lying in the middle of the road when they arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A day later, officers arrested Garnett.

In May of 2018, a second-degree murder charge against Garnett was withdrawn, but a first-degree murder charge remained active in the case.

The jury has recommended that Garnett serve 33 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 9.
