NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth man was charged with driving while intoxicated after a Newport News police vehicle was damaged in a crash early Sunday morning.
Police dispatchers received a call came around 1 a.m. for a crash involving a Newport News police vehicle at the intersection of Hilton Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.
Responding officers found a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle and a 2008 Cadillac Escalade were involved in the crash. The officer suffered minor injuries, police said.
The driver of the Escalade, 39-year-old Richard Avery, complained of some pain, but police said he had no visible injuries.
Police said Avery failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the officer’s vehicle. Avery was charged with DWI and failure to yield right of way.
