Man charged with DUI after tractor-trailer overturns in Va. Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A driver has been charged after a tractor-trailer overturned in a crash Thursday afternoon at a Virginia Beach intersection.

Virginia Beach dispatchers say there was a call about the crash at on London Bridge and Taylor Farm roads just before 12:45 p.m. No injuries were reported, according to dispatch.

Images from a WAVY viewer showed the tractor-trailer on its side. It’s unclear how the crash happened.

Police said 33-year-old Edgar Franklin McDaniel II was arrested just after 1:15 p.m. Thursday, and was charged with commercial vehicle driver DUI.

10 On Your Side spoke with a man who pulled up to the intersection shortly after the crash happened. Michael T. said it’s amazing the driver wasn’t hurt.

“The whole cab was smashed in, the front of the truck was falling off and there was debris everywhere,” said Michael.

The truck was hauling logs, tree stumps and mud when it overturned. There were still tree limbs and mud lying near the intersection 24 hours later.

“The thing I get to see the most is the accidents. People don’t know how to drive or they drive recklessly,” Michael said.

Michael is a Lyft driver and had just dropped off a rider when he rolled up to the accident. “Gas was spilling out, some oil out on the road, so they had it all shut down,” he said. “The driver was kind of off in a field somewhere on his phone and talking to police.”

As a ride-share driver, Michael said impaired drivers are always a concern of his.

“I get nervous every day when I’m out on the road, especially when I got people in my car that just need to get from A to B. This guy thankfully didn’t hurt anybody or himself, but you never know,” he said.

Michael hopes other drivers will think twice before driving while impaired.

“This close to the holidays, you know people gotta  think. You’re going to wreck, you’re going to get caught. Stay home,” he said.

10 On Your Side attempted to find out the company that McDaniel was driving for at the time of the accident, but that information wasn’t immediately available.
