VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect is in custody and charged with arson following an early morning fire that did major damage to a townhome, displacing a family of six.

Shannon Detrick Cason, 37, was charged by Virginia Beach Fire Department investigators after he turned himself in and claimed to have started the fire.

The blaze did extensive damage to the townhome in the 1900 block of Mill Creek Drive, fire officials say, burning a large hole through the roof. The two adults and four children that live at the townhome weren’t home at the time and no injuries were reported.

Cason was still in custody at the Virginia Beach City Jail as of 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

10 On Your Side confirmed Cason’s last known address was the 1900 block of Mill Creek Drive. We reached out to investigators to find out if he lived at the home at the time of the fire. Stay with WAVY for updates.
