Man charged in shots fired incident in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges after police say he started firing near a group of people standing outside of a Newport News house.

Newport News police said the alleged incident happened around 7 p.m. on July 24 along Ridley Circle. A 25-year-old Newport News man was reportedly standing outside when someone approached and started firing a semi-automatic handgun in his direction. 

Police said three females standing nearby at the time were also reportedly in the line of fire. No one was injured.

Officers collected three spent shell casings at the scene, according to police.

Witnesses later identified the suspect as 21-year-old Courtney Leach. 

Police said Leach was arrested nearly six days later and charged with shooting at an occupied building and two counts of malicious wounding.
