Man charged following barricade situation in Franklin

FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) — A man is in jail on gun and drug charges after Franklin police say he barricaded himself inside an apartment.

 Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of gunfire on Cameron Street near Clay.

Police say they found a man with a rifle standing in front of an apartment. That suspect ran inside.

Nearby apartments were evacuated, and police established a perimeter. A gunshot was heard as police were awaiting the arrival of additional units.

Officers tried to get the suspect to surrender via loudspeaker.

Police say 29-year-old Travis Evans came out of the apartment around 4:30 a.m. and was taken into custody. Evan’s mother was inside the apartment during all this, according to police. No one was hurt.  

A search of the apartment turned up a stolen gun, ammunition and drugs.

Evans is faced with several charges: possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics, possession of a schedule I or II drug, discharge a firearm in an occupied dwelling, and discharge a firearm in public.

Police say Evan’s mother was inside the apartment during all this. No one was hurt.
